Alternately symbolistic or surreal, the illustrated book is structured around a visual narrative. The “camera” focuses on the Child as she makes her way along her journey. The Child is illustrated by using or superimposing images of the show's inhabited puppet.
Some sequences are contemplative, presenting the Child in different landscapes as she discovers different kindred spirits. Other sequences simply show the beauty of her body in motion. These sequences are directly inspired by my earlier research involving the performative body and animated film, with the latter drawing on the work of Eadweard Muybridge. For example, the model-sequence of motion (below) captures the intensity experienced by the Child, completely engaged with her senses, as she immerses herself in water and discovers the sensation of water flowing over her body.
Inspired by Olivier Messiaen's compositions that incorporate birdsong, the show's nature-inspired soundscape is transposed into the illustrated book on a “soundtrack” that weaves its way through the story. On this score, sound motifs combine with onomatopoeic writing in place of notes to convey the quality of the sounds and the intensity of their presence in the character's environment.
